I announced today that after the Break, we will be starting a Biography Research project that will involve both Reading and Writing marks for second term.  Absolutely no work is to be done over the holidays.  I am only telling the kids now so you can discuss a suitable person to study (IE:  not the latest "flavour of the month" entertainer).  More details to follow if I think they're necessary

Update

Hello, All:

Just to confirm a few things:  I have a field trip to the Ladner Leisure Centre booked on January 23 with our Buddy class!  That has always been fun in the past.  We will be asking for parent drivers for this date.  In addition, I have the dates set for us to go to Cypress Mountain.  On Friday Feb. 8, the Grade 6s and 7s will be going up cross country skiing and on Friday Feb. 22 we will go up again for snowshoeing in the morning and tubing in the afternoon. We will be taking buses up to Cypress, but we will be asking for some parent volunteers to help supervise on the mountain. Notices have not gone home for any of these trips.  I just wanted to keep you apprised so you know what to expect upon our return from the Break.

Thank you for your continued support and I look forward to seeing you all at our Christmas Concert next week.

***The above note is what is is on the homework board.  To expand on this thought, we started a new novel study today.  The theme is survival in the wilderness.  Over the next several weeks the students will each be reading one exciting book and complete a number of assignments.  The students have the due dates of all of the assignments.  Ample school time will be given every day to work on the assignments (how many times can I work the word assignments into this blog?).  I look forward to seeing the work each student does as we move forward.

4) First Spelling Pre-List is due Tuesday (usually due on Mondays) This is our spelling program for the year.   The children have been given a crash course on how the program works, but if you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

In addition to these, the students know that on the last day of each week, they will have a Spelling test based on the Pre-List they turn in at the start of each week.  I won't be putting the weekly spelling test on the homework board because it will occur, by definition, every week.  They have the basic idea of how this test will run (seeing as they each have individualized pre-lists) and after the first week, it will seem like old news to them.

Hello and welcome back to another exciting school year.  Welcome also to the first blog of this year.

I try to use this blog to help parents stay informed on what is on the homework board at school.  I don't think the blog should replace each student's responsibility for filling out their planners.  I give the class five minutes at the end of each day to fill out their planners and clean up their work area.  This is just one more tool parents can use to ensure they know what is going on in their child's classroom.  You might notice that sometimes work is due one day after it is assigned.  In other cases, I might write something on the board and then post it with many days' notice.  I truly recognize how busy parents and families are and I will try to give fair dates for work to be completed.

I try to write in the blog every afternoon.  Sometimes, however, I am racing out the door to a volleyball game or something and so I might miss by accident once in a while.  I hope this tool is helpful to you and I look forward to meeting as many of you as possible at our Open House next week.

On the homework board today (it's really more organizational than homework):

1) $8 for planners asap

2) Grade seven sheet (picture, not word search) due Tuesday

3) Please try to get the following items by next Tuesday:
sketchbook (nothing hugely expensive by any means; Michaels has some cheap ones)
dictionary and thesaurus (somehow these were left off the Grade 7 list; again, nothing expensive by any means)
French/English dictionary (this one is optional if you don't want to buy one)

We got pretty wet today at Splashdown, but I guess you're going to get wet when you go to a waterpark anyway.  I think the kids had fun.  Thanks to the parents who drove and helped supervise.

We have our trip to Splashdown tomorrow!  The weather might not be the best, so I've told the kids to plan for it, but we're going and it should be fun regardless.
