Also, for those who might not know (though everyone signed off that you have discussed a topic with your child), we are doing a Biography research project right now.  I really want the children to use a variety of resources.  It seems like people these days gravitate towards the internet.  The internet can be a good resource, but if your child has chosen an appropriate person to study, there should be many different source types on that person, including books, movies (which I can set them up to watch independently to take notes during school with a little notice), magazine articles even newspaper articles from certain archives which a public library might be able to help them with.  Not only will there be more marks awarded for using more source types (not a huge amount, but it is worth noting), it will also be in each student's best interest to learn to research from more than just the internet.  If you wish to discuss this further, please feel free to call me at school.

Thursday 9 February, 2012

Well, we had a very fun, very wet day up at Cypress.  My impression was the kids had a great time and for the most part I thought they behaved very well, representing Port Guichon as we all expect them to.

The blog for today has no changes from yesterday, so refer to Wed. for the homework.  The only exception is I don't think I officially assigned some Math (p. 251, I believe, but will confirm tomorrow) on Wed and most kids finished in class.  I would like that done for Monday.

4) We will be beginning a biography research project next week.  I have asked the students to discuss with you possible candidates of famous people to research.  Sometimes the famous people who have been around for a while have more information on them.  I've given a list of potential people (EG:  Elvis, John Lennon, Marilyn Monroe, Cleopatra, Julius Caesar, Walt Disney, Wayne Gretzky, Bobby Orr, Nelson Mandela Roald Dahl, J.R.R. Tolkien, Jimi Hendrix, JFK, Muhammad Ali, to name a few), but they are welcome to choose someone else.  I only worry because I've noticed in the past that people who research the latest celebrity find they don't have much information on that person.  If your child could come up with a person this week and bring some materials for next week (more than just internet searches, though those are important, too) that would help them start off well.  This has been a popular assignment in the past.  We will be posing strong questions, learning research strategies, note taking and paragraph writing, among other skills.  I am looking forward to this.

5) Tuesday will be extended reading day.  We will be reading much of the day:  silent reading, read aloud, partner reading.  Children are permitted to bring in pillows, sleeping bags, even wear pajamas, so long as they are prepared to read.

6) Poems - good copies - Diamonte due tomorrow; Sense poem due Feb. 13 and Season/Weather poem due Feb. 16

I spoke to the class today about the first poems that were turned in (the Synonym poems).  Some students turned in wonderfully thoughtful poems that were presented neatly and creatively.  Unfortunately, too many poems were turned in that seemed to be nothing more than rough drafts with scribbles everywhere and where the criteria (carefully laid out and with a reminder on the board) were forgotten or ignored.  As these poems are for a writing mark, I have suggested that each student ensure they are only turning in their best work.  The poem that was turned in today was first assigned on January 6th and ample school time was given for this assignment.
